I was told that I would receive a laptop computer (aren't those the things that people with real jobs used?) and that the kids could teach me anything I needed to know.

Computers became my thing. Immediately I began to learn how to surf the Internet from 8th and 9th graders (Sanj and Judy said I was teachers' pet). My kids opened up and set aside their raging adolescence to use technology to help me and help each other. As the year with the freshmen continued, I was overjoyed. First, my kids and I had the best rapport in years (gosh Miss Glazer, are all of your PowerPoint slides gonna look the same?). Second, my creativity in teaching increased as new doors were opened to me and in turn to my students (conspiracy takes on a whole new meaning when the Internet is your primary source). Third, I was learning new and exciting things. I had finally found a combination of skills that affected my students in such a positive way that I knew I had to share my findings.

I have since taken my computer knowledge, instructional design ideas, plus my emphasis on personal relationships and applied it to teachers and students in my district and other districts in the North Texas area.

Through the Learning, Design, and Technology program at Stanford University I hope to continue on the route that started for me at the middle school. I was born in Xiamen, Fujian Province in China on November 8, 1969. Later, my family moved to Beijing where I grew up. I am from a family of academics. My father is a professor of linguistics and Chief of the University Journal Agency of Beijing Language and Culture University (formerly Beijing Language Institute). My mother is a professor at the same university and teaches Chinese as a foreign language. From 1991 to 1993, my mother taught Chinese at Wittenberg University, Ohio and Indiana University at Bloomington. She encouraged me to apply for admission to advanced programs in the U.S.

I graduated from high school in 1988, and received the highest scores in my school at the National Entrance Examination for Universities. This made me an “Honor Student” at the national level. Upon acceptance to Beijing Language and Culture University, my major became English, with minors in linguistics, French and computer science. I was awarded consecutive scholarships for all four years in college. During my college years, I became more and more interested in linguistics. My senior year was largely devoted to topics in linguistics, and my required thesis work focused on the influence of cultural and educational factors upon the Chinese and English languages.

After college, Beijing Science & Technology University employed me. For the first year and a half I was assigned to a project aimed at creating improved computer program for idiomatic English-Chinese & Chinese-English translations. This project proved me with considerable experience linguistics, and further improved my understanding of the subtleties of both English and Chinese.

Since the project completion, I have been teaching intensive English courses at Beijing Science and Technology University. Since July of 1993, I have taught English listening comprehension at Beijing Language and Culture University. The latter classes are part of a program that provides adult Chinese professionals with opportunity to improve their English.

My interest in linguistics is initially based on my desire to better comprehend the English language, and, in the process, learn more about my own language. China is now opening and engaging in ever expanding cultural and financial relations with the English-speaking countries of the West. It has struck me, as it may have occurred to many of my compatriots that negotiations to bring about these new and improved relations sometimes break down because of mutual ignorance about each other’s languages. I am aware that this has been a popular problem for study, among Americans engaging in business and other fields, but I am not aware of any serious attempt to research this problem from a Chinese point of view.

Through my work in the U.S., I would hope to contribute to a better understanding of the problems inherent in the deep differences between the two languages.

I recognize that a thesis project in most graduate schools is chosen after on has studied in various programs in a department and after extensive discussion with one’s professors. Nevertheless, I would hope that investigating socio-cultural differences between English and Chinese might be considered a suitable topic. Such a study would focus on the cultural, historical, traditional and educational factors, which influence the two languages, and significantly contribute to possible misinterpretations.

My long-term plan is to continue working on comparative aspects of English and Chinese linguistics. I strongly desire to work in an academic environment combining teaching, research and writing.

新加坡留学入境事项解读

1、入境之前申请IPA

所有学生在入境之前需要获得新加坡移民局(ICA)颁发的原则入境批准函(IPA)。学校将会为学生申请IPA，IPA通常有效期为(3个月/9个月不等)，学生需要在IPA规定的时间内安排入境事宜。

2、申请入境许可

学校向ICA和MOE提交学生的入境许可，申请成功后会获得新加坡教育部的批准入境信函Entry Approval。若航班取消，同学们需提供相关文件。若因个人原因错过入境时间，则要重新申请。一般需要 2-4 周审核周期。

3、预定机票和酒店

与此同时，学校需要同时向新加坡教育部门递交学生的机票信息以及SHN(新加坡当地居家隔离令)期间的地址信息。根据新加坡的政策，从中国大陆地区前往新加坡的人员，SHN时间从14天减少至7天。学校将在收到学生的具体机票和酒店信息之后向新加坡教育部门递交入境许可的申请。

4、获得批准入境函Entry Approval

在递交申请同时，学校会将新加坡教育部门要求支付的新冠病毒检测费用链接发给学生，费用为186新币。

支付之后，学生将在1-2周内获得新加坡教育部进入许可批准函(Entry Approval)，之后学生便可着手准备行李，按照之前购买的机票时间入境(如在IPA和Entry Approval有效期内)，Entry Approval一般要求2周内入境。

2、录取规格

Beside mathematics, I maintained my close contact with biology and used different books as my references like 'Science of Biology' by P. Weisz and R. Keogh. I have always enjoyed presentations by Professor Richard Dawkins. When I was younger, I made use of 'Kingfisher Encyclopedia' very often. I also like physics and have read some parts of Halliday's physics.

One thing which I am very good at is having presentations and conferences. I think after making so many speeches and presentations, I have no problem speaking in front of others. I always try to organize them in a way that everybody can learn something. Most of the presentations I have had in school were about biology.

In addition to learning, I teach English in some language institutes. Teaching from early ages has taught me lots of things which have been very helpful for my everyday social life.

Although I don't talk much, I am not shy at all. I prefer listening to others and learn something rather than talking about things that I might not even have the slightest idea about it. I have long before realised the better quality of higher education in the UK among other universities in the world, and I like to study there because the universities have such an atmosphere. I had private mathematics classes in English which showed me that I wouldn't have problems with courses taught in English. I am also trying to improve my biological vocabulary by reading biological articles and texts in English.

I like to listen to light music and I have learned to play the guitar and a little piano. It really helps me to relax. Luckily, my father has always believed that a healthy mind is within a healthy body. As a result, we all have been growing pretty fit. I like swimming and orienteering which makes me closer to nature. I like natural parks and fields and jungles, and I also love watching animals, while they are doing their everyday routines.
