I have figured this out on examination of my activities in high school (youth group regional president), college (telephone crisis counselor, resident advisor), or profession (teacher). As a teacher I made a point of getting to know every student in my classes personally. It quickly became my experience that students were more willing to learn, work, and excel when they were appreciated as individuals and when they knew that the adult in the classroom genuinely liked them.

After a few years' experience teaching seniors, I accepted a teaching job at the middle school with the freshman class that had just learned they would not physically be moving to the high school. How would I motivate and get to know these kids? Everything that I had ever heard about or remembered about 9th grade made me want to turn and run. But what convinced me to take this job was technology. In my interview I learned that instead of the library, I was to use the Internet (the what?). I was told that I would receive a laptop computer (aren't those the things that people with real jobs used?) and that the kids could teach me anything I needed to know.

Computers became my thing. Immediately I began to learn how to surf the Internet from 8th and 9th graders (Sanj and Judy said I was teachers' pet). My kids opened up and set aside their raging adolescence to use technology to help me and help each other. As the year with the freshmen continued, I was overjoyed. First, my kids and I had the best rapport in years (gosh Miss Glazer, are all of your PowerPoint slides gonna look the same?). Second, my creativity in teaching increased as new doors were opened to me and in turn to my students (conspiracy takes on a whole new meaning when the Internet is your primary source). Third, I was learning new and exciting things. I had finally found a combination of skills that affected my students in such a positive way that I knew I had to share my findings.

I have since taken my computer knowledge, instructional design ideas, plus my emphasis on personal relationships and applied it to teachers and students in my district and other districts in the North Texas area.

Through the Learning, Design, and Technology program at Stanford University I hope to continue on the route that started for me at the middle school. I know that I will learn new things and have an opportunity to apply them to educational settings. Although a master's degree is the short term goal, I believe that my long term goal remains the same as when I began using technology in my classroom three years ago: to see students better educated through a curriculum infused with technology by teachers who do not lose sight of the personal relationships that benefit all kids.

My senior year was largely devoted to topics in linguistics, and my required thesis work focused on the influence of cultural and educational factors upon the Chinese and English languages.

After college, Beijing Science & Technology University employed me. For the first year and a half I was assigned to a project aimed at creating improved computer program for idiomatic English-Chinese & Chinese-English translations. This project proved me with considerable experience linguistics, and further improved my understanding of the subtleties of both English and Chinese.

Since the project completion, I have been teaching intensive English courses at Beijing Science and Technology University. Since July of 1993, I have taught English listening comprehension at Beijing Language and Culture University. The latter classes are part of a program that provides adult Chinese professionals with opportunity to improve their English.

My interest in linguistics is initially based on my desire to better comprehend the English language, and, in the process, learn more about my own language. China is now opening and engaging in ever expanding cultural and financial relations with the English-speaking countries of the West. It has struck me, as it may have occurred to many of my compatriots that negotiations to bring about these new and improved relations sometimes break down because of mutual ignorance about each other’s languages. I am aware that this has been a popular problem for study, among Americans engaging in business and other fields, but I am not aware of any serious attempt to research this problem from a Chinese point of view.

Through my work in the U.S., I would hope to contribute to a better understanding of the problems inherent in the deep differences between the two languages.

I recognize that a thesis project in most graduate schools is chosen after on has studied in various programs in a department and after extensive discussion with one’s professors. Nevertheless, I would hope that investigating socio-cultural differences between English and Chinese might be considered a suitable topic. Such a study would focus on the cultural, historical, traditional and educational factors, which influence the two languages, and significantly contribute to possible misinterpretations.

My long-term plan is to continue working on comparative aspects of English and Chinese linguistics. I strongly desire to work in an academic environment combining teaching, research and writing.

一、加坡大学申请条件

1、公立院校

I can remember my childhood, playing in the garden and exploring why worms come out when it rained. With the help of my ever growing passion for learning, I have found my way into the world of biology. I have also studied mathematics in high school. It really gave me the chance to learn variety of ways for solving problems. Beside mathematics, I maintained my close contact with biology and used different books as my references like 'Science of Biology' by P. Weisz and R. Keogh. I have always enjoyed presentations by Professor Richard Dawkins. When I was younger, I made use of 'Kingfisher Encyclopedia' very often. I also like physics and have read some parts of Halliday's physics.

One thing which I am very good at is having presentations and conferences. I think after making so many speeches and presentations, I have no problem speaking in front of others. I always try to organize them in a way that everybody can learn something. Most of the presentations I have had in school were about biology.

In addition to learning, I teach English in some language institutes. Teaching from early ages has taught me lots of things which have been very helpful for my everyday social life.

Although I don't talk much, I am not shy at all. I prefer listening to others and learn something rather than talking about things that I might not even have the slightest idea about it. I have learned to respect others because I like them to respect me back. Besides my own personal experiences, the output of my parents' upbringing is that today I admire wisdom, love to learn, feel fit, enjoy the company of good people, admire honesty, look forward to the life's challenges and love to compete. My best criterion, however, is that I am curious and have an eager to learn.

I respect science for the nature of it and not for the degree that I am going to receive. I like to study biology, not to become a university professor, but to discover what is vague for me and others. I have long before realised the better quality of higher education in the UK among other universities in the world, and I like to study there because the universities have such an atmosphere. I had private mathematics classes in English which showed me that I wouldn't have problems with courses taught in English. I am also trying to improve my biological vocabulary by reading biological articles and texts in English.

I like to listen to light music and I have learned to play the guitar and a little piano. It really helps me to relax. Luckily, my father has always believed that a healthy mind is within a healthy body. As a result, we all have been growing pretty fit. I like swimming and orienteering which makes me closer to nature. I like natural parks and fields and jungles, and I also love watching animals, while they are doing their everyday routines.

At the end, I would like to provide that my goal for studying biology is to discover more from the mysterious world of genetics. I hope that one day, human being can control and dominate his own DNA system and choose how he wants his children to be.
