Adieu, Cinema! (A)

In 1957, as many as 900,000,000 people went to the cinema, whereas the number of TV viewers was 400,000,000. Three years later, 500,000,000 cinema-goers vs 500,000,000 TV viewers the same. In 1963, the cinema fell, compared with TV. In 1974, only 70,000,000 went to the cinema, but as many as 800,000,000 peoplewatched TV.

Although the cinema has its own unreplacable merits, the television can do most of the things the cinema does, and more importantly, people can stay at home with their famfiy, watching what belongs to both TV and the cinema. In rainy days no one wfil think of the cinema except for some special reasons.

People like TV better for another reason. They can choose anything they like, just by switching from one channel to another. But in the cinema, you have no choice, if you don't want to come again for something different.Sample for band 6

Adieu, Cinema! (B)

The cinema used to be the most popular recreation in the first half of the 20th century, till 1957, when the television began to show films and plays. If people didn't have to go out to see films or plays, why didn't they stay at home? That's why the cinema declined rapidly as TV became more popular. In 1957, as many as 900,000,000 people went to the cinema, while there were only 400,000,000 people who watched TV. Three years later, only 500,000,000 liked the cinema, while 500,000,000 people watched TV. In 1963, about 300,000,000 cinema-goers to 650,000,000 TV viewers. In the next six years the number of cinemagoers dropped further, while the number of TV viewers continued to rise. In 1974, only 70,000,000 went to the cinema. As many as 800,000,000 people switched to TV.

Nothing can hope to enjoy eternal popularity. Not the cinema. Not TV. Now, in the last years of the 20th century people liked the computer. Nearly everything is available on the Internet, including all for TV. What will happen to the computer, say, in the 2050s, no one knows. Will TV lose out to computer, I wonder?

We have seen some famous movies, such as Harry Potter and Twight, both are hot sell novels. When we see the novels have been put into the screen, it is naturally that we will compare the original one and the adapted one, the latter is always being critical, I prefer to see the novels.

The English novels are excellent, the first novel I saw was Twight, it is about a vampire named Edward and a human girl named Bella, they fall in love, but the different identities makes them hard to be together. When I read the story, I was so impressed, Bella’s inner voice is so strong that I imagine myself is her. While when I saw the movie, the plot happens so fast, Bella’s love is still strong, but for the audience, it is hard for them to understand. The long story is shorten, we have to finish the story in one and a half hour. The quick watch makes the audience hard to perceive the character’s inner world, so the strong feeling is weaker.

So for me, I like to read novels, I can perceive the character’s emotion and be immerged in the novel world.

Fancy the original or movie ones?

Nowadays, there are more and more moviesbase on the literary masterpiece appeared, especially the popular fiction, werefilmed as TV series and welcomed by audiences. For many pop novels, the TVproducers are set to re-shoot the plays. Reading the original version simplydoes not seem as popular as it once was. As far as i concern, i prefer theoriginal one.

Onthe one hand, the movie scenes are not comparable to the charm of words. Movieis limited by many factors, such as the story historical background, thedescription of the senses, which is the biggest problem to movie producer. Itis almost impossible to create similar scenes to the original one hundredpercent. Besides, the actor’s performance can not be ignored. Some charactershave a special personality charm; it is a big challenge for actors to recreateit on the screen.

Onthe other hand, movie deprived the pleasure of reading. When we are reading abook, we could create a scene base on the words in our mind, we could imaginethe looks of leading role whatever we like. It is fascinating that the world inthe book reappears in our head. However, the movie is too much intuitive and specific, we could see exactlywhat is on the screen, which is not good for our imagination.

Inmy point of view, i prefer the original ones rather than the movie. I enjoy thepleasure of reading, which the film cannot be compared.

Reading a Book Or Watch a Movie

As movies are prevailing, more and moreliterature works are adapted to movies. Most people will choose to watch amovie to get the knowledge a story or our history. Some people, however, preferto read books to obtain knowledge. For me, I think that watch a movie will bemy priority for I can get easily what I want by watching a movie.

First of all, watch a movie can betime-saving. If you read a book, you may need several days to read through it.But if you see a movie, then you just need less than 2 hours to know what havehappened.

Second, see a movie can be moreinteresting. In a movie, we can see not only celebrities we love, but also canenjoy the fun of wonderful scene and sound effect.

Besides, we are impressed deeply by seeinga movie. You may forget what have happened after a short period throughreading. However, you can remember deeply by seeing a movie because scenes anddialog are so easier to keep in mind.

All in all, I think watching a movie wouldbe the fast way to know what have happened. And also, it is interesting forpeople to see a movie rather than read a book. Moreover, movie will impress usdeeply.

Should we go to the cinema to watch movies?

Nowadays, people like to go to the cinema to watch movies. They think the big screen and the incredible sound is a treat. Somehow, I think go to the theater to watch films has a lot of disadvantages. Sometimes, these shortcomings even overwhelm the pleasure of watching movies.

First, when you on your way to the cinema, you may stick in traffic jam and cannot arrive on time. If you make it, you may have problem of finding a parking spot. As you know, not every cinema has enough places for you to park. The time you have wasted on the road can do different kinds of things. If you choose to stay at home to watch movies, you don’t need to worry about these problems. You’re not only saving your precious time but also parking fees and gas. Second, you may have to stand in line for hours just to buy yourself a ticket. It is annoying. If the tickets have sold out, you will wait another day. Sometimes you succeed in buying a ticket, but it was not the best seat. You might seat just in front of the screen or in the last row. When you’re watching the movie uncomfortably, you will be regret that you have made the wrong choice. Maybe you should seat in your own sofa to watch. Last, the atmosphere of the theater is not always as good as you think. People around you allow eating anything they want, which means they will make a lot of noise while they’re chewing. What’s worse, you may seat next to the person who talks on the phone while you try really hard to listen to what the actress says, or a young couple who seat behind you happily discuss about how the movie will end. This is annoying, isn’t it? Due to these reasons, I think people should reconsider whether it worth to go outside to watch a movie, while we have the condition to watch at home. The problems and the hazards can be avoided if we choose to stay at home. Thus, it’s more convenient and comfortable to stay at home to watch movies.

shadow in the story. But why do some people always leave things till tomorrow? To them, time is never to be used up. If today ends, there is still tomorrow.

In my opinion, Future is somewhat a mystery, for nobody can tell what his future will be. You may win the lottery and become a millionaire overnight and you may have an accident and become paralyzed. So future is just like a butterfly, when you extend your arms and try to get it, are you sure you can get it.

William Shakespeare once said:" On the great clock of time, there is only one word-that is 'now'. Now means today. Now is more practical than future. If you grasp today firmly, you'll catch your future. Maybe everyone knows the famous slogan of Nike Company, "Just do it!" I'm going to add one word to it, "Just do it now!"

Winter

I was born in Guangdong, the southernmost province in mainland China where in winter the temperature seldom falls be low 5C. For the past 19 years, I had never seen snow. I couldn't remember from when I had been dreaming of seeing a real snow, and experiencing a bleak winter.

Before I entered the university, I had never expected the climate difference of Shanghai and Guangzhou. But as October came, the falling golden leaves and the chilly winds indicated that this winter would be cold.

October walked away in the whisper of the falling leaves.Winter approached in November, and then December.

The dazzling golden color already faded away, leaving only the bare branches sticking out into the frosty air. Grass that was once as thick as a fine cardigan carpet could no longer be found anywhere. What I saw were the slushy fields which were jade green in September.

I considered it a great fortune to watch the sun, which was mild, jumping off the horizon and into those bare branches.Even on sunny days, the temperature was still low. The campus was left deserted and lifeless.

Was this what I had been longing for? Could it be called a bleak winter? I thought I should feel satisfied. Shanghai is still in the south. I couldn't expect more. But there was still some thing in my mind, as it was only one step to my dream. I prayed every day for a snow. A slight one could be enough. Once again.God heard.

I'll never forget the morning of Christmas. On my way to the library, a white elf found its way into my coat. It took me more than a minute to realize what was happening. Believe it or not, it snowed. Suddenly I understood why God took all the signs of life away in winter. He must have been clearing up a stage for his spoiled kid snow.

Tears welled up in my eyes, for my thankfulness to God and to the special, bleak winter.
