My ‘A’ Level English studies have introduced me to a more academic teaching style with an emphasis on the need for independent work, in order to gain the very best grades. I enjoy seeking more depth and insight, whether for school texts of private reading and study. I have often made use of Leach Scragg’s “Discovering Shakespeare’s Meaning” when studying “Romeo and Juliet”, “Macbeth”, “Twelfth Night” and “The Merchant of Venice” to help me to read and understand the plays more thoroughly. Anthony Holden’s biography has given me a basic understanding of Shakespeare and his world. I have recently purchased “Literary Theory: An Anthology”, edited by Rivkin and Ryan to support my developing interest in critical theory.
In my studies to date I have looked at the modern novel but have recently become interested in learning more about the Victorian novel as the precursor to modernism. I am exploring the concept of the didactic, omniscient narrator and how Victorian authors dealt with issues of contemporary social change. I have read Dickens’s “Great Expectations” and am currently reading Eliot’s “Middlemarch”. A theme that interests me is that of religious faith and doubt also expressed at the time through Victorian post-romantic poetry, such as Arnold’s “Dover Beach” and Clough’s “The Latest Decalogue”.
My reading of modern literature, exploring the theme of “teenage angst” has included works by J.D.Salinger, Nicky Hornby and Sue Townsend. I have also enjoyed the monologue art form of Alan Bennett’s “Talking Heads”. Through his artless narrators I feel that Bennett successfully reveals the comic aspect of the too often tragic human condition. (This tragedy is explored further in the darker, “Talking Heads Two”).
My other studies have broadened my knowledge but I have been keen to incorporate literary aspects. In art, I am currently writing a critical and analytical study on “Stuckism” and last year I completed a piece of work based on the Canterbury Tales. French, apart from providing me with a second modern language, has given me the opportunity to sample foreign literature i.e. Pagnol’s “Jean de Florette” and “Manon des Sources”. I have also found that having to communicate in a foreign language has given me the skill of revising my thinking before I speak or write. Next summer I am going to stay with French friends in the South of France and am then hoping to considerably improve my fluency.
My vocational ‘A’ Level in “Media: Production and Communication” has fuelled an interest in linguistics that I have furthered by reading “The State of the Language” by Phillip Howard. This ‘A’Level has helped me to appreciate the richness of the English Language with its jargon, slang, dialects, argot, clichés, and foreign influences. It has given me the opportunity to edit and write for “The ________” and the ambition to be involved in campus publications in the future.
I enjoy going to the theatre and have seen productions by the RSC, our local TOADs theatre company as well as televised productions such as “A Day in the Death of Joe Egg”. I have also had a role in a university student play and had the opportunity to watch other degree level drama.

This activity has also allowed me to introduce other young people to activities that I have enjoyed. This role has also helped me to develop skills that would help me while I am at university. The sports group involves arranging individual sessions as well as trips out. This has improved my organisational skills, which has reflected my ability to combine part-time work with college effectively. Working as part of a team and serving members of the public has also improved my social skills, making me more confident when working with others.
I wish to study at university, not only for the knowledge that I will gain from the course, but also for the experience of university life has to offer. During my two years at college I have participated in various activities. 英国留学行前准备指南
一、整理行李

1.交通规则——靠左行驶

The interpretation of literature from other cultures is pivotal to our exploration and understanding of historical and social contexts throughout the literary world. French literature complements my study of English, for instance the importance of 'courtly love' and the development of poetic style in each country. I have a great interest in French culture; I enjoy French film and have loved studying the work of Truffaut at A2-level as well as reading a few simple novels at home.
My passion for the French culture also extends to my interest in History. This AS-level has not only broadened my knowledge of French history (I studied the French Wars of Religion for my coursework) but has also enhanced my analytical and essay-writing skills. I also study Psychology and have a great interest in human interaction, which complements and supports my study of literature. In English I have developed my writing skills; my comparative and analytical skills have been particularly important for this year's coursework essay, in which I am comparing 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles' by Thomas Hardy and 'The Handmaid's Tale' by Margaret Atwood. I have always been brimming with questions about the how and why of the world around me. In fact, one of my biology teachers once commented in response to my constant questioning that I was an extremely curious student and a pleasure to have in class.
When in the 8th grade we began studying the three sciences independently, I developed a special affinity towards biology and chemistry. Medicine was the first thought that came to mind when I thought about a career in Biology and Chemistry but I could not foresee myself working in a clinic on a day to day basis. Being a student of the International Baccalaureate program, I got a lot of exposure to laboratory work which I thoroughly enjoyed. The International Baccalaureate encourages its students to question knowledge and test theories for themselves, an approach which suited me perfectly. The interdisciplinary approach of the program to science helped me broaden my perspective of the scope of research and crystallised my decision to study a course in molecular biochemistry. 英国留学院校考核方式
一、作业(Assignment)
在英国读书，也是会安排作业的，在完成了单堂课的学习之后，大部分老师都会布置下课后的作业，读学生的学习情况进行巩固和考核，是需要大家在课堂上认真的听讲的。
而且每一次考核的分数，都会算到最终的考核测评分数中，大概会占到10%-20%的比例，所以千万不要忽视了作业的作用，而且也千万不要缺课逃课，随堂的作业也是有可能会出现的。
二、演讲(Presentation)
为了增加师生之间的互动，以及学生之间的合作，还会安排一定的演讲活动，需要个人或者小组进行探讨的展示，除了要展示自己的讨论结果之外，还需要接受老师的问题问询。
三、论文(Essay)
包括课程上完之后的论文作业，一般是规模较小的论文，只需要2000字左右，完成一个小论题的阐述，需要做到细致而且完善，能够自圆其说，同样会占到后续考核的分数比例。
然后是阶段课程完成之后的学年论文，这部分需要大家在导师的指导下进行，要先选导师然后确定题目，一般范围会比较大，要求大家完成一篇5000字左右的论文，需要话比较长的时间。
四、考试(Exam)
纸质的考试依旧还是目前阶段考核的主要形式，也是大家GPA成绩的直接来源，在基础的课程完成了之后，就会安排考试时间，考试周一般在三到五天，大家需要提前进行准备。
而形式则是由老师出题，大家在半封闭的教室内进行考试，时间会固定，答完题之后收卷由老师进行评分，分数会在之后进行统一的公示，而题目有选择、简答等不同的形式。
五、专题研究(Project)
紧接着就是非常规的研究，这部分一般是由导师安排的项目，属于选修和加分项，并不要求所有的学生参加，而且如果没有特殊表现也不会对考核产生很大影响，但是对动手能力有很好的提升作用。

授课型硕士
Taught Postgraduate (PGT) Courses，包括MSc，MA，MBA，MEng等，学制一般是一年，大多数同学申请的都是授课型硕士。
