Almost any technology we take for granted today involves engineering: from mobile phones to space shuttles, engineering certainly has an impact on our daily lives. Increasingly over the last few years, I have become drawn to engineering and the wide range of possibilities that studying in this field can offer. Modern technology always intrigues me and I find it fascinating to see how they function, especially with the intricate physics behind them. I believe that although it is important to determine how things work, it is perhaps more valuable to understand why they fail and use it to our advantage to construct better solutions. After embracing a larger interest in engineering, I decided to broaden my mind by reading about different engineers such as James Watt and Edison. They both inspired me as they dedicated their work to improve living standards at the time, which revolutionized the way we lived. In July I attended a Headstart course at Loughborough to discover more about this field in general, and it has further secured my opinion that I want to be part of this area of expertise. Working at Steve Leung's Architects in Hong Kong last summer has provided me with a sound opportunity to gain an incredible insight into the areas of architecture and structural engineering. Although it was hard work, I enjoyed the challenges by solving them with scientific and mathematical ideas. Besides, I learnt to use statistical models to solve complex calculations, whilst developing teamwork and time management skills.
I believe that I am well suited to this field, as my subjects and thinking reflect the nature of engineering. Studying physics with the Advanced Extension Award has provided me with the core scientific knowledge needed. My innate logical thought enables me to apply this theory to diverse and practical problems, which I find challenging and enjoyable. Maths has given me numerous problem solving opportunities and allows me to apply usual concepts to solve unusual situations. Furthermore, by studying Design and Technology, I gained experiences with electronics, materials and CAD/CAM, as well as coping with large amounts of coursework. Alongside the main subjects, I am also undertaking Chinese as an extra language. In addition, Geography at AS level presents me with analytical abilities and a greater awareness of issues on a larger scale.
For the past 4 years I have thoroughly enjoyed boarding, as I get on well with others easily. This has helped me to develop as a person, making me independent and organized, but more importantly it has developed my interpersonal skills. As I am from a family of Chinese origins in the UK, I am able to speak both English and Chinese fluently, which is an invaluable advantage for me. Apart from my curricular activities, I like to be involved with other aspects of school life, such as sports. My favorites are rugby and hockey, and I am currently a member of the 1st Hockey team. I also help to coach the U15s team occasionally, and this develops my teamwork skills and discipline. On the other hand I have enjoyed taking part and helping to coordinate ???Jack and the Beanstalk???, which is the school pantomime for this year. Whenever possible, I enjoy socializing with friends, as I believe there is more to life than just academic success.

I was born in Xiamen, Fujian Province in China on November 8, 1969. Later, my family moved to Beijing where I grew up. I am from a family of academics. My father is a professor of linguistics and Chief of the University Journal Agency of Beijing Language and Culture University (formerly Beijing Language Institute). My mother is a professor at the same university and teaches Chinese as a foreign language. From 1991 to 1993, my mother taught Chinese at Wittenberg University, Ohio and Indiana University at Bloomington. She encouraged me to apply for admission to advanced programs in the U.S.
I graduated from high school in 1988, and received the highest scores in my school at the National Entrance Examination for Universities. This made me an “Honor Student” at the national level. Upon acceptance to Beijing Language and Culture University, my major became English, with minors in linguistics, French and computer science. I was awarded consecutive scholarships for all four years in college. During my college years, I became more and more interested in linguistics. My senior year was largely devoted to topics in linguistics, and my required thesis work focused on the influence of cultural and educational factors upon the Chinese and English languages.
After college, Beijing Science & Technology University employed me. For the first year and a half I was assigned to a project aimed at creating improved computer program for idiomatic English-Chinese & Chinese-English translations. This project proved me with considerable experience linguistics, and further improved my understanding of the subtleties of both English and Chinese.
Since the project completion, I have been teaching intensive English courses at Beijing Science and Technology University. Since July of 1993, I have taught English listening comprehension at Beijing Language and Culture University. The latter classes are part of a program that provides adult Chinese professionals with opportunity to improve their English.
My interest in linguistics is initially based on my desire to better comprehend the English language, and, in the process, learn more about my own language. China is now opening and engaging in ever expanding cultural and financial relations with the English-speaking countries of the West. It has struck me, as it may have occurred to many of my compatriots that negotiations to bring about these new and improved relations sometimes break down because of mutual ignorance about each other’s languages. I am aware that this has been a popular problem for study, among Americans engaging in business and other fields, but I am not aware of any serious attempt to research this problem from a Chinese point of view.
Through my work in the U.S., I would hope to contribute to a better understanding of the problems inherent in the deep differences between the two languages.
I recognize that a thesis project in most graduate schools is chosen after on has studied in various programs in a department and after extensive discussion with one’s professors. Nevertheless, I would hope that investigating socio-cultural differences between English and Chinese might be considered a suitable topic. Such a study would focus on the cultural, historical, traditional and educational factors, which influence the two languages, and significantly contribute to possible misinterpretations.
My long-term plan is to continue working on comparative aspects of English and Chinese linguistics. I strongly desire to work in an academic environment combining teaching, research and writing.

一、加坡大学申请条件
1、公立院校
高中生必须参加完高考后才可以申请这三所大学的本科生，并且高考分数在500分以上，雅思成绩在6分以上。如果成绩没有达到，那么可以参加新加坡政府举行的A水准考试，通过后也可以就读这三所学校。公立大学硕士学位一般要求中国211工程大学学士学位，大学平均分80以上，雅思6.5以上(部分专业要求7.0)。

新加坡留学不同阶段语言要求
一、高中以下学历
一般需要先读3个月的语言学校，3个月后，可以继续选读语言或者上中三。因为国内初三毕业去的，基本都要降级读的。
新加坡中学是4年的，到SEC4的时候就要准备O-Level的考试了，这个考试很重要。
新加坡的政府中学收费很低，但是需要交纳1000-2000不等的赞助费，如果学生的年龄在16岁以下，父母还可以申请陪读。
二、高中学历及专科学历

三、本科学历

I have been working since 1999 for the People’s Bank of China, a Chinese version of the Federal Reserve, at its unique research institute of security printing, with the responsibility of designing the Chinese currency and the machinery to produce it. By engaging me in a variety of projects, the job afforded me ample exposure to cutting-edge developments in computer technologies, particularly in CAD software. I have, for example, recently redeveloped a purchased CAD (Computer Aided Design) software to make it more suitable for our own purposes. By adding our own part/subassembly to the database and make our own drawing criteria, we have achieved dramatically better efficiency.
My job performance, which has won me professional respect from all of my colleagues, was achieved thanks to the strong background I acquired as a student in computer science. My undergraduate GPA ranked first among the 63 students of classmates in mechanical department, for which I was awarded first-class and second-class prizes many times. My graduate GPA ranked among the top 4% of the 105 students in my year, which won me the “San Hao” scholarship every year during the three years of my graduate studies.
Unlike many other Chinese students, who are content with performing well in exams, I made a point of learning through my own hands-on experiences. In the Master’s program at the Beijing Institute of Printing, I gained an in-depth understanding of artificial intelligence, including expert system and genetic algorithm, especially in neural network. For my thesis, I programmed a multi-level BP neural network with C language to analyze my mathematical model, and applied much of my knowledge in optimization. I thus became able to program with a host of different computer languages, especially C++, with which I helped my graduate advisor to design a paper-cutting machine. To analyze the mechanism statically and dynamically, I programmed a software system to analyze and emulate it on screen. In undergraduate studies, I had often programmed with Fortran77 and the Basic language.
Upon the completion of my Master’s studies, I easily passed the doctoral record examination in CAD/CAM of Beijing University, one f the top universities in China. But I gave up the opportunity in order to gain more practical experience in the industry. The decision proved to be right, as it guaranteed me better access to sophisticated facilities, such as state-of-the-art personal computers. With the People’s Bank of China, I have thus accumulated solid expertise in many kinds of operating and application software systems, particularly in CAD. I now have a firm grip on the latest developments in computer science in China.

新加坡留学的误区
1.到新加坡留学能进国立大学
新加坡公立大学严重“自给不足”。新加坡政府学校只有3所大学，4所理工学院，14所工艺教育学院，2所高级中学和14所初级学院。目前，新加坡大学的录取率只占考生的21%，学校招生能力远远满足不了国民对教育的需求。新加坡教育部规定，希望就读“顶尖”学校的外国学生，必须参加新加坡教育部组织的统一资格考试，考生只有在英语、数学和母语等科目达到“0”水准后，才能获得这些“顶尖”学校的入学机会，无法通过考试的外国学生，只能到其他学校就读;此外，新加坡教育部门还规定，新加坡政府学校的学额必须优先满足本国学生的需求，换句话说，只有这些学校招收本国学生没有满额时外国学生才有可能进入。目前，在新加坡4所政府学院有1000多名中国学生就读，且基本上是这些学校根据中新两国教育部的协议招收并享受奖学金的本科生，或者是新加坡为吸引人才招收的研究生和博士生。自费考取新加坡高等学府的中国学生几乎没有。而且，新加坡的一些着名高校对外国留学生一般只招研究生，不招本科生，因而国内高中毕业生要上新加坡国立大学本科几乎是不可能的，除非你特别优秀，公立学校一般是进不去的，只能到五花八门的私立学校闯荡。
2.私立学校能授予学位
有些中国学生及其家长认为只要花钱就能在新加坡的私营学校获得文凭。事实上，取得新加坡大学本科以上学位证书并非易事。在新加坡教育系统中，有权授予学士以上学位证书的教育机构只有3所政府大学。除此之外，新加坡4所理工学院以及所有私营的学院都不能颁发大专以上的学历证书，部分在新外国高等学校分校或与外国高等院校合办课程的私营学校也只能由外国高等院校本部授予部分专业的学位证书。
目前，新加坡的私营学校兴旺发达，至少有500多所，包括私立学校、外国学校和一些工商组织和团体开办的学校。这些学校属公司性质，以盈利为目的，按产业进行经营，由工商管理部门发给营业执照，并到新加坡教育部注册。这些学校大多是计算机、商业和语言学校以及补习中心，学制和学额没有定制，课程设置和收费标准五花八门，只报教育部备案，没有资格颁发大专以上文凭。教学和师资条件优劣混杂，教育质量参差不齐。门槛很低，对学历要求不高，也不一定经过严格的入学考试，一般交钱就能被录取，但基本上都不能授予学位或正规学历。一些国外大学在新加坡开设的分校和学校，由于受新加坡政府限制不能全日制上课，因此基本都是远程教学，或临时筹组班子应付学生，学生与教师基本不谋面。还有一些外国高等学校为谋取暴利，不惜滥发文凭。对这样的所谓国际学校要特别小心。
3.新加坡是留学跳板
有人希望把新加坡作为留学西方的跳板，以为到了新加坡就可以方便地申请美国、英国和澳大利亚等国学校，其实这是一厢情愿。中国学生与新加坡本地学生的身份不同，申请去西方国家留学签证时仍被列为中国学生，考察难度和在国内是一样的。
4.可以合法打工
很多人以为新加坡是华人国家，可以勤工俭学，学成后在新加坡谋一份差事便可落脚谋生。其实，获准在新加坡学校就读的学生由新加坡移民_发给学生准证，而新加坡法律规定持学生准证不能打工，更不能就业。偷偷就业，包括从事家教都是违法行为。中国学生更不能自动成为新加坡的公民或永久居民，他们之中，博士生和研究生要找到用人单位才可以在新加坡就业;享受新加坡奖学金的本科中国学生，一般都与校方签有毕业后为新加坡服务5-6年的合同，毕业后必须先完成为新加坡服务的合同才能到别的国家择业或继续深造。其余中国学生，学生准证一旦期满，都不能滞留新加坡，除非有单位为其申请到工作准证。
5.陪读者能合法工作
还有一些学生家长被人误导，以为能够随着孩子留学而申请新加坡入境陪读，打算到新加坡打工赚钱供子女上学，事实是，外国人在新加坡就业必须持有人力部颁发的就业准证或工作准证，除非申请者是新加坡急需的人才或有特殊的背景，陪读者根本申请不到就业和工作准证。
