In connection with my application for acceptance into your Ph.D. program, I am enclosing the following statement concerning my life, professional activities, and tentative future plans.

I was born in Xiamen, Fujian Province in China on November 8, 1969. Later, my family moved to Beijing where I grew up. I am from a family of academics. My father is a professor of linguistics and Chief of the University Journal Agency of Beijing Language and Culture University (formerly Beijing Language Institute). My mother is a professor at the same university and teaches Chinese as a foreign language. From 1991 to 1993, my mother taught Chinese at Wittenberg University, Ohio and Indiana University at Bloomington. She encouraged me to apply for admission to advanced programs in the U.S.

I graduated from high school in 1988, and received the highest scores in my school at the National Entrance Examination for Universities. This made me an “Honor Student” at the national level. Upon acceptance to Beijing Language and Culture University, my major became English, with minors in linguistics, French and computer science. I was awarded consecutive scholarships for all four years in college. During my college years, I became more and more interested in linguistics. My senior year was largely devoted to topics in linguistics, and my required thesis work focused on the influence of cultural and educational factors upon the Chinese and English languages.

After college, Beijing Science & Technology University employed me. For the first year and a half I was assigned to a project aimed at creating improved computer program for idiomatic English-Chinese & Chinese-English translations. This project proved me with considerable experience linguistics, and further improved my understanding of the subtleties of both English and Chinese.

Since the project completion, I have been teaching intensive English courses at Beijing Science and Technology University. Since July of 1993, I have taught English listening comprehension at Beijing Language and Culture University. The latter classes are part of a program that provides adult Chinese professionals with opportunity to improve their English.

My interest in linguistics is initially based on my desire to better comprehend the English language, and, in the process, learn more about my own language. China is now opening and engaging in ever expanding cultural and financial relations with the English-speaking countries of the West. It has struck me, as it may have occurred to many of my compatriots that negotiations to bring about these new and improved relations sometimes break down because of mutual ignorance about each other’s languages. I am aware that this has been a popular problem for study, among Americans engaging in business and other fields, but I am not aware of any serious attempt to research this problem from a Chinese point of view.

Through my work in the U.S., I would hope to contribute to a better understanding of the problems inherent in the deep differences between the two languages.

I recognize that a thesis project in most graduate schools is chosen after on has studied in various programs in a department and after extensive discussion with one’s professors. Nevertheless, I would hope that investigating socio-cultural differences between English and Chinese might be considered a suitable topic. Such a study would focus on the cultural, historical, traditional and educational factors, which influence the two languages, and significantly contribute to possible misinterpretations.

My long-term plan is to continue working on comparative aspects of English and Chinese linguistics. I strongly desire to work in an academic environment combining teaching, research and writing.

A student of the Peking University’s inaugural program of advertising, I am writing in support of my application for acceptance into your graduate program of communication studies. With my solid education and my professional experience that is as colorful as it is rare, I believe that, with your seasoned guidance, I can build upon my strong background, for a pioneering career in China’s booming advertising industry.

At Peking University, dubbed the Harvard of China by President Clinton on his recent trip to Chins, I have been a student star on campus due to my outstanding academic performances. When I entered into this university in 1995, I already stood out among my crop of freshmen, having won a total of scores in the 1995 National College Entrance Examinations that was the fifth highest in Beijing. A fervent fan of my chosen subject of studies, I have proved myself as much of an intellectual wizard in higher learning as I was in grade school, as demonstrated by my grades, which placed me at the very top in my class of 23. My GPA in the first three years is 89.5, a rarely seen high grade in PKU. My GPA for core courses is over 90, far higher than that of my fellow students. I was the only one who received 100, the full mark, in two theoretical courses, the advanced mathematics and appreciation of fine arts. In practical courses like computer design, my grades were also high, sometimes as high as 96. In recognition of such stellar performances, I have been named the top student of the department and granted Academic Excellence Scholarships for three consecutive years. But I was no bookworm. To broaden my vision and enrich my knowledge, I also chose electives in such fields as Russian Literature and Chinese History. In the first semester of the academic year 1996-1997, I worked part-time with the PKU TV Net, where I was offered a splendid opportunity to improve my ability in journalism. Being a Weekly News broadcaster, I regularly faced tens of thousands of audience, which greatly increased my confidence. I learnt to think independently and cooperate wit others when doing the series reports “PKU students’ life”, a program which was mainly about student recipients of prizes in national and international contests. Unlike most other students, I have never stopped working while in school. From September 1997 on, I have been working as a research assistant in CCTV’s Qiantu Advertising Company, the sixth biggest in China. My responsibility is to establish a market database. Difficult as it was, I have handled it without a glitch. I have also done part-time work helping to promote the President Food Corporation and served as a research assistant in the S & D Research Agency, a consulting firm specialized in conducting market surveys for multinationals in China.

With special skills in Chinese calligraphy, I taught calligraphy in the China Children’s Center, the best of its kind in China. My students, mostly six to twelve years old, had difficulties in understanding the aesthetics inherent Chinese calligraphy. To help them, I taught them Chinese poems and ancient characters instead of confining myself to only calligraphy. The approach turned out to be very effective, and their skills improved dramatically. In these and other similar experiences, I gained skills of interpersonal communication, particularly in terms of how to understand other people’s problems and how to help them out.

It is in my working experience that I first developed the desire to pursue advanced studies in a quality graduate program in the United States. As an intern with the Dentsu Young & Rubicam Advertising Corporation, one of the world’s largest communications groups, I now witness firsthand the dramatic social and economic changes engendered by the proliferation of digital technologies and increasing corporate globalization. These changes have created the highly sophisticated information society. Trying daily to develop wordings that could catch people’s attention in this complex society, I have acquired a heightened sense of urgency about improving attention in this complex society, I have acquired a heightened sense of urgency about improving China’s advertising industry at both theoretical and practical levels. As an undergraduate, I have learned the basics of advertising, and I would be promising in China as a graduate from one of the country’s best universities. With a booming advertising industry in China, I will surely secure a well-paying job. But I cannot be satisfied unless I can help my country as much I help myself. For that, I wish to enhance my capabilities by pursuing graduate studies in such fields as mass communication, communication studies or media studies at a university in North America, where these genres of studies are much more developed than in China. Whatever program I get in, I would like my studies to be focused on the theories of and practices in advertising. If you find me qualified for advanced studies in areas other than those I have mentioned, I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know any suggestions that you may have.

The University of Hawaii is well known for its unique position as a bridge between east and west. It is well known for its excellence in the communication field, complete with an accomplished faculty and modern research resources. The most important element of my classroom, my office, or my home is a personal relationship. First, my kids and I had the best rapport in years (gosh Miss Glazer, are all of your PowerPoint slides gonna look the same?). Second, my creativity in teaching increased as new doors were opened to me and in turn to my students (conspiracy takes on a whole new meaning when the Internet is your primary source). Third, I was learning new and exciting things. I had finally found a combination of skills that affected my students in such a positive way that I knew I had to share my findings.

I have since taken my computer knowledge, instructional design ideas, plus my emphasis on personal relationships and applied it to teachers and students in my district and other districts in the North Texas area.

Through the Learning, Design, and Technology program at Stanford University I hope to continue on the route that started for me at the middle school. I know that I will learn new things and have an opportunity to apply them to educational settings. I also know that I will be able to establish relationships with colleagues, professors, and other students. Although a master's degree is the short term goal, I believe that my long term goal remains the same as when I began using technology in my classroom three years ago: to see students better educated through a curriculum infused with technology by teachers who do not lose sight of the personal relationships that benefit all kids.

This long-term goal may be achieved by working in a single school, a school district, or an educational center. It may be reached by teaching new teachers on the university level, by instructing at-risk students in a county after-school program, or by designing a terrific new classroom model and implementing it through a regional education lab with a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Whatever the job, my aim remains the same and as it did years ago with my freshmen, I feel certain that I will use any situation to fulfill my goal to benefit students (can you say optimistic, or is it opportunistic?).

出国留学选择专业参考指南

一、专业的排名

对于排名,我们要理智看待,其实专业的排名,没有你想象的那么重要。

也可以说,这排名的重要性可能被过度放大了,它实际没有你看到的那么大。

举个例子,哈佛之前在很多工程专业的排名上都上不了榜,但是几年之间,就到10多位了。

后来可能专业建设的好等原因,排名又上升了。这个可以说明,专业排名是可能有变数的。

另一个方面,你需要注意的是排名背后的故事。

其实排名的依据很复杂,和该专业里面有多少老师,这些老师总共拿了多少funding,每年又发了多少文章等等都有关系。

但是,这个是按照整体来算的。

也就是说,很可能拿一个100多个老师的系和一个只有15个老师的系去比,那么结果就很明显了。

可是,反过来说,我们更为关心的是这个系老师的平均能力和分数。

如果仔细看排名,就会发现有些学校虽然老师不多,但是也有60、70,有的学校100多位

老师,也不过就50、60,还是要看自己的判断。

这样的例子常见于一个小的私立和一个州系统里面的公立。

二、专业的对口

就不用过多强调了,相信大家自己也能体会到专业不对口的郁闷。

不要轻易放弃自己的专业,尤其是当这个专业在找工作时能起到很大帮助的时候。

之前有同学,在EE里面做微波,后来因为没资金就转到了物理。但是要知道,在EE里面4、5年毕业算是个比较正常的情况。

物理可能要6、7年,且自身专业只是偏向物理,与真正的物理研究还是有出入,耽误了最终就业的时间。

如果真的觉得自己不适合,可以考虑改变自己的专业,但希望刚入学的同学可以先深入了解一下自己的专业,再做出抉择。

很多行业领域还是需要深耕、专业的符合自己的兴趣,听起来虽然挺随意,其实很重要。

很多同学可能连自己的兴趣都不太确定,所以选专业时自然就忽略了这一点。

只有这个专业符合你的兴趣,才能在后期学习时,尽自己努力去学好,才容易做出成就。只有热爱,才会拼劲全力。

因为专业很大程度上影响了未来就业的职位方向,如果不够热爱,在后期的工作中,同样可能无法做出大的成就。

I have always held aspirations to become a teacher, specifically in the primary sector. After withdrawing from York, I decided to take the opportunity to extend my experience in schools on a voluntary basis at a local Special School (Beacon Hill Special School, Ipswich). This resulted in my being offered a full-time paid position as a Special Support Assistant. I have found myself inspired by the challenge of encouraging these young people to realise their potential and this has further cemented my decision to become a teacher.

I have a particular interest in drama. During High School I was a member of the Wolsey Youth Theatre in Ipswich. This involved me in various productions; The Railway Children, Watership Down, A Christmas Carol, and Roald Dahls Boy. I also participated in High School productions. I think that these skills are very important, because I have already found that drama can be a useful educational tool, especially in the early stages of learning.

I have completed my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, which I found a great challenge, but very rewarding. I also hold Grade 5 in Trombone, Grade 1 cornet, and Award 6 in trampolining.

4、交通

在泰国他们的车辆是靠左行驶的,这点要非常注意,一不小心搞混后果可是很严重的。

5、小费

在泰国接受了服务员的服务后有些时候也需要给小费,注意给小费时不能够给硬币,在泰国硬币是给行乞者的(最少20泰铢)。

I have written for the official college Network, which is sent home to parents, and the Student Newspaper.

When selecting my A Level subjects, I seemed drawn to essay based courses. I enjoy writing and the courses undoubtedly helped my writing skills. However, I was required to make the opening of a film in Media, which was an experience to say the least! It increased my interest in Broadcast Journalism. Until that moment, I only had eyes for Print. Creative writing has always been one of my favourite aspects of English, and the coursework gave me the chance to write in whichever style I chose, one piece was a newspaper feature on Chelsea Football Club. I have always been interested in Sports Writing and Im considering specialising in it at a later date. I have chosen to continue four of my five AS Levels onto A2, even though it was not necessary. I have always found Psychology quite challenging as it involves deep levels of critical analysis, so I decided to carry on as I find it extremely intriguing. The different theories as to why humans do the things they do, attract me because I am interested in how people act, though one could hardly call me an anthropologist! My main priorities are English, Media and Sociology as I feel they will aid me most in my ambition, although I still find Psychology a fascinating subject.

I have often said that nothing is impossible, yet asking me to name my favourite book is asking too much. Some much-loved literature includes The Hobbit, Gone With The Wind, and Jane Eyre. In my opinion a good novel should evoke a variety of emotions from beginning to end. Music may not be my first love, but it is definitely one of my passions; I have high passes in grade 3 flute, singing, and grade 5 piano. Like my literary tastes, my choice of music is eclectic; I like anything from hip-hop to classical, soul to rock, and past to present. I also love Black history, musicals, and icons of film and music, such as Audrey Hepburn, John Lennon, and Sinatra. Lennon once said, We all want to change the world, I empathise with this view and seek to achieve it using my chosen profession and the power of the media.

20xx年新加坡留学难度

高中:

中国学生不可以直接插班到新加坡高中初级学院留学,需在新加坡参加新加坡O水准考试,英文与另外五科成绩(L1R5)的积分为20分以下的学生,便可以选择进入初级学院修读高中课程。

中国学生年满15岁就可以参加新加坡O水准考试。新加坡O水准考试预备课程申请条件:存款证明16万人民币,不需要托福雅思,提供四份公证书、一份证明。

本科:

首先本科生的年龄必须要在19到25岁之间,申请公立大学需要优异的高考成绩。

另外还需要雅思成绩在6.0以上,具有以上资格的学生需要参加入学考试,通过考试才会被新加坡大学录取。

研究生:
