二十三日碧空晴朗，欲出南郊，先出铁楼门。过艾行可家，登堂见其母，则行可尸已觅得两日矣，盖在遇难之地下流十里之云集潭也。其母言：“昨亲至其地，抚尸一呼，忽眼中血迸而溅我。”呜呼，死者犹若此，生何以堪!询其所伤，云“面有两枪”。盖实为阳侯助虐，所云支解为四，皆讹传也。时其棺停于城南洪君鉴山房之侧。洪乃其友，并其亲。毕君甫适挟青乌至，盖将营葬也，遂与偕行。循回雁西麓，南越冈坞，四里而至其地。其处乱冈缭绕，间有掩关习梵之室，亦如桃花冲然，不能如其连扉接趾，而嫱寂过之。洪君之室，绿竹当前。危冈环后，内有三楹，中置佛像，左为读书之所，右为僧爂cuān之处，而前后俱有轩可憩，庭中盆花纷列，亦幽栖净界也。艾棺停于岭侧，亟同静闻披荆拜之。余诵“同是天涯遇难人，一生何堪对一死”之句，洪、毕皆为拭泪。返抵回雁之南，有宫翼然于湘江之上，乃水府殿也。先是艾行可之弟为予言，始求兄尸不得，依其签而获之云集潭，闻之心动。至是乃入谒之，以从荆、从粤两道请决于神，而从粤大吉。时余欲从粤西入滇，被劫后，措资无所，或劝从荆州，求资于奎之叔者。时奎之为荆州别驾，从此至荆州，亦须半月程，而时事不可知，故决之神。以两处贷金请决于神，而皆不能全。两处谓金与刘。余益钦服神鉴。盖此殿亦藩府新构，其神极灵也。乃觅道者，俱录其词以藏之。复北登回雁峰，饭于千手观音阁东寮，即从阁西小径下，复西入花药寺，再同觉空饭于方丈。薄暮，由南门入。是日风和日丽，为入春第一日云。

二十四日在金寓，觉空来顾。下午独出柴埠门，市蒸酥，由铁楼入。是夜二鼓，闻城上遥呐声，明晨知盗穴西城，几被逾入，得巡者喊救集众，始散去。

二十五日出小西门，观西城被穴处。盖衡城甚卑，而西尤敝甚，其东城则河街市房俱就城架柱，可攀而入，不待穴也。乃绕西华门，循王墙后门后宰门外肆，有白石三块欲售。其一三峰尖削如指，长二尺，洁白可爱;其一方竟尺，中有沟池田塍可畜水，但少假人工，次之;其一亦峰乳也，又次之。返金寓。

是时衡郡有倡为神农之言者，谓神农、黄帝当出世，小民翕xī和顺然信之，初犹以法轮寺为窟，后遂家传而户奉之。以是日下界，察民善恶，民皆市纸焚献，一时腾哄，市为之空。愚民之易惑如此。

二十六日金祥甫初为予措资，展转不就。是日忽阄jiǖ会一种民间集资方法，得百余金，予在寓知之，金难再辞，许假二十金，予以田租二十亩立券付之。

二十七、二十八、二十九日俱在金寓候银，不出。

二十四日呆在金祥甫的寓所，觉空前来拜访，下午独自走出柴埠门，买了些蒸酥，从铁楼门回到城中。这天夜里二更时，远远地听到城墙上有呐喊声，第二天早晨得知夜间有盗贼挖掘西城墙，盗贼几乎越墙而入，幸得巡逻的人发现后呼喊众人救助，盗贼才逃离开。

二十五日走出小西门，观看西城墙上被挖掘的地方。大略地说衡城的城墙很低矮，而西城墙尤其破败，东城那一段却是河街的店铺房屋都就着城墙架立柱子，可以攀着它们就进入城内，不必要挖掘开城墙。而后我便绕过西华门，顺桂王府城墙后门〔后宰门外一家店铺中，有三块白色的石头想出售。其中公块上有三根峰棱，尖削得如手指，长两尺，洁白可爱;另有一块约一尺见方，中间图像如河渠池塘、田块、田埂，可以蓄水，但稍经人工雕凿过，不如上述那一块;还有一块也是峰乳石，又更差一些。〕返回金祥甫的寓所。这段时期衡州府有人带头传布关于神农的流言，说神农、黄帝正降临人世，老百姓个个都很相信，开始还只是以法轮寺为流言传布的场所，后来便家家相传户户信奉。因为流言说神农、黄帝在二十五日这天下到凡间，视察民众的善事恶行，所以老百姓都买纸焚烧祭供，一时间纸价被哄抬而飞涨，市场上的纸张销售一空。愚昧的民众就是如此容易被迷惑!二十六日金祥甫开初为我筹措银两，反反复复都未能成。今天他上会拈阉，忽然拈中，得到百余两银钱，我在寓所中知道了这消息，金祥甫难以再推辞，答应借给我二十两，我用二十亩田租立了契据交付给他。
